In 1841 Edward Waine and his wife Elizabeth were living in Marple Cheshire with their seven children. Edward worked as a weaver. Two sons went on to marry and have children, Samuel and William. In 1861 William was lodging in Coppenhall (Crewe) and working as an engine cleaner. This was the first rung on the ladder to becoming an engine driver. William Waine married Jane Latham (born 6 January 1845) at Stockport parish church on 7 August 1865. Samuel and Margaret Waine were witnesses. By 1871 William was an engine driver. William and Jane had three children Alfred Edward, George Edwin and William. |

In 1881 the family now had two more children Sarah Jane and Ernest. They were living at Henry Street, Crewe. Son Alfred Edward aged 15 was working as an engine cleaner. (He would eventually also become an engine driver) The couple had two more children Elsie in 1885 and Edith in 1893 who died as a baby. Ernest (born 18 Nov 1876) was apprenticed as a railway engine fitter.He married Alice Allcock (born Coppenhall 28 Mar 1877) at Nantwich parish church on 27 Aug 1900 and they had nine children. Ernest and Alice later moved to the Wirral area, where Ernest worked as a shipbuilders engine fitter.

Ernest's son William Waine was born in 1903. He also worked on the railways as an iron moulder in Crewe Works. He married Margaret Ruth Hulse at the Baptist Tabernacle, West St, Crewe on 4 June 1927. They had five children who were brought up in Crewe attending West Street Baptist Church. Photo left shows William and Margaret photographed to celebrate a family wedding with children Geoff, Cyril, Norma, Audrey and Graham in early 1940s.

The children attended local schools including, St Adelaide's primary school and Ludford St Secondary Modern. The boys were in the sea cadets. Their mother Margaret was a talented poet, and often wrote poems for the local newspaper and church anniversaries.

Some members of the family moved further afield. Young Geoffrey Waine (left, and right in group picture) worked for many years in Seattle for Boeing before retiring to a beautiful part of South Wales, near his grandchildren. |
