COWLEY and ALLBRIGHT family of Bucks and Northants
|

|
Henry Barley was born in Wolverton, Buckinghamshire on 15 March 1843 son of William Barley and Catherine (Cowley). His mother Catherine was born around 1812 in Newport Pagnell daughter of bricklayer Richard Cowley and Ann (Allbright). Both died in Stony Stratford. In the 1851 census just before she died widow Ann was shown as a pauper, lodging with a family in the Horse fair area. Ann's parents were whitesmith James Allbright and Mary (Mills) a lacemaker. |

Henry's father William was a shoemaker - a common occupation in the Northampton area. He was born in 1817 in Stony Stratford which built up as a strategic crossing point over the river Ouse. Stony Stratford became known as the "The town on the Road", a major staging post on the main Liverpool to London road. At its peak, up to 35 stage coaches passed through the town each day (or took advantage of the facilities at one of the sixty inns!) |

| Wolverton which is situated between Stoney Statford and Newport Pagnell, was one of the first "Railway towns" created by employment in the Railway works and lines. Not surprisingly Henry went on to become a steam engine fitter, settling eventually at another key Railway town, Crewe in Cheshire |
Henry married Ruth Harris (from Dunchurch in Warwickshire) in Crewe, Cheshire and they had four children William, Thomas, Mary Ann and George. Ruth died at the age of 57 in Crewe. |

After Ruth died in 1897, Henry remarried a widow Matilda Bosworth who had four children. Matilda had also been widowed when her husband Walter Bosworth, a fireman on the railways, died. An inquest was held which finally concluded he had died of natural causes. |
