Ruby Wedding

Robert Thomas Baker (right) was born 23 September 1835, son of James and Mary Baker (nee Wright), born around 1798/1807 respectively.

Robert married Sarah Catherine Patston, born 11 March 1838. She was daughter of Samuel Patston born 1802 and Sarah Catherine (nee Arnold) born 1797. For details of their ancestors - see family tree

They had at least two children. Samuel (baby on right with sister Mary) was born on 20 August 1864.

Samuel (right) was brought up in Bethnal Green and worked at various times as a parcels porter, municipal clerk and insurance agent.

He married Emma Emily Moore (right) from Tottenham, born 25 October 1865 daughter of James Moore of Tottenham and Julia Fox of Heytesbury Wiltshire (see family tree)

The wedding took place at St Frances de Sales, Tottenham on 3 Sept 1887

They went on to have twelve children between 1888 and 1909, Monica (died young), Leonard, Winnifred, Wilfred, Gladys, Doris (died young), Eric, Mildred, Leslie, Vernon, Hilda and Elsie.

Samuel (and his wife) lived into their eighties to see their children and grandchildren grow up unlike Samuel's father and grandfather who died in their forties

Gladys Florence Mary Baker was born 22 April 1894 in Tottenham.

Gladys suffered with Asthma and it was recommended that she moved away from London, to the country. She moved to Great Dunmow where should would meet future husband Harry George Pepper.

She collected postcards particularly those depicting churches. Her brother Wilfred (born 1892)often sent her cards from France where he was stationed during WW1.

Another card from sister Winnifred shares her concern about the "boys going off to France"
